When I became the writer for what’s now Our World, three of the four main characters had last names – Art didn’t. At the same time (~2010) I was reading a book on climate change called Under a Green Sky. It discussed a hypothesized past phenomenon called a Canfield ocean, in which excessive oceanic carbon dioxide levels choke out the kind of life we think of when we think “ocean.” The process is complex and kind of sad, but it’s not important right now unless you’re planning to go time traveling.
So I read that and made an extremely obscure joke about it in this page by giving Art’s family the last name “Canfield” and his uncle a real-estate business. I did this with the warm certainty that absolutely nobody would get it.
What I didn’t expect was that the term was so obscure that the original Our World site started showing up on the first page of Google results for “Canfield ocean.” I don’t know if that’ll happen again (we’d ended up on page two by the time the original site closed down), but if you’re here because you searched for “Canfield ocean” and you have no idea what you’re looking at right now… hi!
